Jos Bierings: I go to shipyards to install stone products

That floor turned out gorgeous. Which is exactly what I love about my job.

Stone craftsman at Stone Natural Class

Jos Bierings joined Stone Natural Class in January of 2018, as a stone craftsman. This company in the south of the Netherlands crafts custom designed luxury stone products for the interiors of exclusive villas and impressive super yachts. It’s employees? They’re incredibly relaxed about all that.

Creating beautiful pieces, like these, does not feel like working, at all

“We use natural stone to create all kinds of pieces, like vanity tops, baths, bathroom walls and floors, but kitchen counters, window-sills and thresholds as well. Recently, I helped create a marble floor made from Bianco Raffaello, with inlaid flowers made of Blue Agate. That floor turned out gorgeous. Which is exactly what I love about my job. Creating beautiful pieces, like these, does not feel like working, at all.”

After the bonding has set, I can start shaping the stone

All items start out at the drawing table. Some of Jos’ co-workers specialize in using a waterjet to custom cut the required parts. Stone craftsmen like Jos get these parts next. “First, I bond the parts. Only after the bonding has set, I can start shaping the stone. Depending on the specifications, I add facets, radiuses or bulges to the edges. Ultimately, I add gloss or colour by polishing the stone.
Recently, I got to go to a shipyard to install our stone products into a superyacht. That allowed me to experience our product from the beginning to the end.”

From asbestos remover to natural stone craftsman

Before Jos joined Stone Natural Class, he worked as an asbestos remover. He did not have any previous experience in working with natural stone. “Over the past few months, I have gotten ample opportunity to learn and grow. It wasn’t always easy. The variety of stone types can be confusing. Hard stones require a different treatment than softer stone types. I get more experienced every day. My co-worker Ruud trains and guides me well. He helps me out where needed and explains what he does, and why. The team spirit is amazing, everyone is helpful. I really enjoy that.”
